Ileostomy
Department: General Surgery
Estimated Cost : $1 - $5
An ileostomy is a surgical procedure typically performed when the large bowel (colon) needs to be removed or rested due to various medical conditions. This procedure may be necessary in cases involving growths in the large bowel, such as bowel cancer or bowel polyps that have the potential to develop into cancer.
Types of Ileostomy
There are two primary types of ileostomy procedures:
- Loop Ileostomy: This type is performed when there is a need to protect a connection between the intestine and the colon. In a loop ileostomy, the surgeon brings a loop of the small intestine (ileum) through a small opening in the abdominal wall, typically located upstream of the connection. An opening is created in this loop, which is then attached to the skin, allowing waste to exit into an ostomy bag.
- End Ileostomy: In this procedure, the surgeon brings the very end of the small intestine through the abdominal wall. This type of ileostomy is typically performed when the colon has been completely removed and waste needs to be redirected through the ileostomy.
