What Are Hemorrhoids (Babaseer)?
Hemorrhoids, also known as Babaseer in Hindi, are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus. They are similar to varicose veins and can cause pain, itching, swelling, and bleeding, especially during bowel movements. Hemorrhoids are common and can affect both men and women.
Types of Hemorrhoids
- Internal Hemorrhoids:
- Located inside the rectum.
- Usually painless but may cause bleeding during bowel movements.
- External Hemorrhoids:
- Found outside the anus, under the skin.
- Can be itchy, painful, and may form blood clots (thrombosed hemorrhoids).
Stages of Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids progress in four stages, based on their severity:
- Stage 1 – Mild:
- Internal hemorrhoids with no visible swelling.
- Light bleeding may occur.
- Managed by dietary changes and good bathroom habits.
- Stage 2 – Protruding Hemorrhoids:
- Hemorrhoids may protrude during bowel movements but return on their own.
- Itching and bleeding become more frequent.
- Stage 3 – Prolapsed Hemorrhoids:
- Hemorrhoids protrude and stay outside the anus.
- They need to be pushed back manually.
- Pain and discomfort increase, requiring medical treatment.
- Stage 4 – Severe Prolapse:
- Hemorrhoids remain permanently outside the anus.
- Cannot be pushed back and may cause severe pain and bleeding.
- Often requires surgical removal.
Causes of Hemorrhoids
- Chronic constipation or diarrhea
- Straining during bowel movements
- Prolonged sitting (especially on the toilet)
- Low-fiber diet
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Aging
Treatment and Prevention
For Early Stages (1 & 2):
- Eat a high-fiber diet (fruits, vegetables, whole grains)
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid straining during bowel movements
- Use over-the-counter creams and ointments
For Advanced Stages (3 & 4):
- Minimally invasive procedures like:
- Rubber band ligation
- Sclerotherapy
- Surgical treatment (e.g., hemorrhoidectomy) for severe cases
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical advice if:
- You notice excessive bleeding
- Hemorrhoids cause severe pain or swelling
- There is no improvement with home treatment
